La Maison de la Truffe

La Maison de la Truffe is not to be missed, located only a 3-minute walk from the Relais Madeleine. Established in 1932 by truffle salesmen from Carpentras, an area renowned for its truffle production, then taken over in 1978 by chef Guy Monier, the shop evolved into a delicatessen before being purchased by the Kaspia group, known for specializing in caviar.


A quick word about truffles

 

There are different varieties of truffles, whose price and maturity periods vary. So the black truffle, Tuber melanosporum, one of the most prestigious types, reaches full maturity between mid-January and late March, depending on the season.

But does this mean that eating a fresh black truffle requires waiting until winter? No: La Maison de la Truffe offers fresh black truffles from Australia's Manjimup region, which offers climatic and geological conditions that make it comparable to French truffle patches. So when winter begins in Australia, the summer is hitting its peak in France, which allows for fresh Melanosporum from June to August.

The truffle is the most expensive food product, especially because of its rarity and its production cost. The price of the black truffle varies from €500 to €1000 per kilogram. The white truffle of Alba ranges between €5000 and €7000 per kilogram.

The delicatessen side

La Maison de la Truffe offers a selection of high-quality products, with great marketing and the seal of approval. This means that the prices are higher, but so is the quality. A product from La Maison de la Truffe may be the perfect gift if you are looking for an iconic piece of French culinary chic, so you can add more products according to the budget you want to spend.

Today, the scent of truffles can be fabricated, with remarkable results. It's therefore important to know that manufacturers make extensive use of this strategy. For example, a "truffle-based" oil can sometimes be made that is less than one percent truffle (sometimes ground up) and be supplemented by artificial flavoring. So read the ingredients carefully.

The delicatessen's wide selection means you can make yourself a small, varied, and high-quality gift basket: fine foods, foie gras, seafoods, condiments, and more.

Don't forget to try the truffle madeleine. Pastry chef Gilles Marchal (Bristol, Plaza Athénée, Maison du Chocolat) opened his patisserie in 2014 and worked in partnership with La Maison de la Truffe to create his madeleine sold there exclusively.



The restaurant side

The decor is simple and elegant. The atmosphere is cozy and "tasteful". The restaurant is ranked 382nd out of 13,000 Parisian restaurants on TripAdvisor. A nice reference.

The cuisine is rich and the menu is provided. It offers three options for each course:

  • With "seasonal truffles" (other than black and white truffles, depending on seasonal availability)
  • With black truffle
